Jessica Simpson’s close friend claimed she was “unfairly imprisoned” during her marriage to Eric Johnson: “She’s truly escaped from a monster…” What happened?

Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson have officially called it quits after 10 years of marriage,

with the singer opening up about feeling “suffocated” in their relationship leading up to the separation.

The 44-year-old pop star and fashion mogul announced their split on Monday,

revealing that they had been living separately for some time, though the couple has kept the details of their breakup private.

The couple, who wed in 2014 after four years of dating, share three children: Maxwell “Maxi” Drew (12), Ace Knute (11), and Birdie Mae (5).

Their marriage has been under public scrutiny for months,

with rumors circulating about the state of their relationship, especially after Johnson, 45, was noticeably absent from Simpson’s social media posts since 2023. Fans also observed that Simpson stopped wearing her wedding ring in January 2024, a move that was mirrored by Johnson in recent months.

In an exclusive statement to *People*, a source close to the couple revealed that their relationship had grown increasingly strained in recent years. “Their marital issues have felt suffocating for a while,” the insider shared. “She needs to move on for her own well-being.” Simpson, who has always been vocal about her personal life, is reportedly focusing on her career and maintaining a positive outlook, despite the emotional toll of the breakup.

Simpson has already shifted her focus towards a musical comeback, and according to the insider, she is “excited about her new album.” However, they acknowledged that the separation was not an easy decision for Simpson. “The breakup is not anything she’s taken lightly,” the source explained.

Despite their differences, Simpson and Johnson are reportedly committed to co-parenting their children. “They have already figured out a new schedule for the kids,” the insider said. “Both are great parents, and the kids will always come first. They are co-parenting and she’s grateful for her kids.” Simpson’s children are her top priority, and the separation appears to be amicable when it comes to their shared responsibilities.

In a heartfelt statement to *People*, Simpson described the breakup as a “painful situation,” but emphasized the importance of her children’s well-being. “Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them,” Simpson said. She also expressed her appreciation for the love and support she has received from fans during this challenging time, while requesting privacy as the family works through the transition.

Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson first sparked romance rumors in May 2010, while Johnson was still married to his first wife, Keri D’Angelo. The couple finalized their divorce in October of that year, paving the way for Johnson and Simpson’s relationship to blossom. Their connection grew stronger over the years, eventually leading to their marriage in 2014.

However, it seems that after a decade together, the couple grew apart. Speculation about the state of their marriage intensified when Johnson was noticeably absent from social events and Simpson’s social media accounts. Fans took to social media to express concern, with many noticing the absence of Johnson in the posts, sparking further rumors about the couple’s relationship status.

Despite their publicized split, Simpson and Johnson remain committed to their children and have stated that they will continue to share parenting duties. Simpson has also remained focused on her career, both in music and fashion, with the release of her new album and a possible return to the spotlight.

Before her marriage to Johnson, Simpson was famously married to pop singer Nick Lachey from 2002 to 2006. Following her divorce from Lachey, she had high-profile relationships with figures like John Mayer, Tony Romo, and Billy Corgan, among others. Simpson’s latest chapter marks a turning point in her personal life, but with a focus on her children and professional aspirations, she appears determined to move forward with grace and strength.

As Simpson and Johnson move forward with their separate lives, they continue to prioritize their children and their co-parenting journey, navigating this difficult chapter with maturity and mutual respect. Fans will undoubtedly continue to support Simpson as she embraces the next phase of her life, both personally and professionally.
