Rob Beckett confessed that he was forced to leave BBC Radio 2 because of his family: “They would cut ties with me if I kept this job…”

Comedian and Taskmaster star Rob Beckett has announced his decision to step away from his BBC Radio 2 show, marking the end of his weekly slot on the station.

Beckett, who took over the Sunday evening program from the late Paul O’Grady, has been hosting the show from 5pm to 7pm since 2022.

However, due to his increasingly busy schedule, he has decided to step back, though he reassured fans that he will still be involved with the station in the future.

Balancing Work and Family

Beckett explained his reasons for leaving in a statement, highlighting his growing tour commitments and the impact on his family life.

“I’ve had such a laugh each Sunday getting to know the listeners, but as my tour schedule hots up and my family forget what I look like, I’ve decided to step away from a weekly show,” he said.

Despite stepping down from his regular slot, Beckett made it clear that this isn’t a permanent farewell from BBC Radio 2. “But you won’t get away from me that easily as I’ll be back presenting shows on Radio 2 later in the year when normal service is resumed!” he assured his fans.

Acknowledgment from BBC Radio 2

Helen Thomas, head of BBC Radio 2, expressed her gratitude for Beckett’s time on the station and confirmed that he would still be a part of the Radio 2 family. “I’d like to thank Rob for his brilliant work every Sunday evening. He’ll stay within the Radio 2 family and will be heard on the station at a later date,” she stated.

Paul O’Grady’s Departure and Legacy

Before Beckett took over the Sunday slot, the program was previously shared with the late Paul O’Grady, best known for his iconic drag persona Lily Savage. O’Grady left the show in 2022, citing dissatisfaction with the station’s scheduling decision, which required him to alternate hosting duties in a 13-week-on, 13-week-off arrangement.

Following O’Grady’s passing in 2023, many fans and colleagues paid tribute to the beloved entertainer, recognizing his invaluable contributions to British entertainment. His departure from Radio 2 had been a significant moment for the station, and Beckett stepping in as his successor helped maintain the show’s popularity.

Changes to the BBC Radio 2 Lineup

With Beckett’s departure set for April, BBC Radio 2 has announced changes to its programming. Pick of the Pops, a long-running music program, will move from its usual Saturday afternoon slot to take over Beckett’s Sunday evening time. Meanwhile, popular presenter Zoe Ball, who previously stepped away from the Breakfast Show, will be making her return to the station in May.

Ball is set to host a new Saturday afternoon show from 1pm to 3pm, where she promises to bring her signature warmth and humor to reconnect with listeners. Alongside this, BBC Radio 2 has confirmed that she will also be fronting two special programs focused on legendary singer Elaine Paige.

What’s Next for Rob Beckett?

While Beckett is leaving his weekly radio gig, his schedule is busier than ever. His stand-up tour continues to gain momentum, and his television appearances remain a staple of British comedy entertainment. Fans of his quick wit and infectious humor can still catch him on shows like Taskmaster and in various upcoming projects.

Although his time as a regular host on BBC Radio 2 is coming to an end, listeners can take comfort in knowing that Beckett will be returning for guest appearances later in the year. His decision to step back reflects the challenges of balancing a demanding career with personal life, and his openness about the change has been met with support from fans.

As BBC Radio 2 prepares for a lineup shift, Beckett’s departure marks another transition for the station. However, with his promise to return and Zoe Ball’s upcoming show, listeners can look forward to fresh content while still enjoying familiar voices.
