Robin Roberts is opening up about her unique living arrangement with her wife, Amber Laign, shedding light on why they reside in separate homes despite their deep bond.
The Good Morning America anchor, 64, explained during a January 22 segment that their decision is not entirely by choice but rather a necessity due to their work schedules.
“It’s not for everyone,” Roberts admitted. “Amber and I [live separately], not by choice, but because of the work schedule.
But there’s a lot of trust there. And there’s some people from my past I would not have done this with.”
Roberts, who has been a fixture on Good Morning America for years, lives in a $2.5 million apartment in Manhattan, conveniently located near the show’s studios.
Meanwhile, Laign, 50, has her own residence in the Upper West Side, just 10 minutes away.
A Long-Distance Love Story in the Same City
While their weekday living situation keeps them in separate homes, Roberts and Laign spend much of their time together at their stunning 0.92-acre estate in Farmington, Connecticut. It was at this picturesque home that the couple exchanged vows in 2023 after nearly two decades together.
The COVID-19 pandemic marked a major turning point in their relationship, as it was one of the rare times they spent extended periods together under one roof.
“We spent more time together this year than in the previous 15 years combined. We’ve never been stronger!” Roberts told People in April 2021.
Recalling the start of the pandemic, she shared, “I remember when I packed up part of my dressing room here [in New York City] and headed home to Connecticut a year ago. I’m glad I packed a lot of patience.”
A Love That Withstood the Test of Time
Roberts and Laign’s love story began in 2005 when they were introduced on a blind date. However, they kept their relationship private for nearly a decade before Roberts publicly came out as a lesbian in 2013 through a heartfelt Facebook post.
Over the years, the couple has been each other’s rock, particularly during challenging health battles. Roberts, a breast cancer survivor, became Laign’s pillar of strength when she was diagnosed with the disease in 2022.
“She and I have been together almost 17 years and have helped each other through our challenges like my journey with cancer,” Roberts shared in a touching Instagram video at the time. “It’s my turn now to be there for her like she was for me.”
After undergoing treatment, Laign completed her radiation therapy in July 2022, and a few months later, the couple made the exciting announcement that they were planning to tie the knot.
An Unconventional Engagement and Wedding
Roberts and Laign’s engagement was far from traditional, but it was perfect for them.
“Now, looking back, it was pretty fitting for us to not have a down-on-one-knee [proposal] and one person doing it,” Roberts said. “It was just us hanging out in our little hole-in-the-wall Mexican spot and putting calamari rings on each other and saying, ‘Let’s go. Let’s do it.’”
Though they had discussed marriage for years, they had postponed their plans due to Laign’s illness. Once she recovered, Roberts was eager to move forward with the next chapter of their lives.
“We’re getting married this year,” she announced in January 2023. “It was something we had talked about, but we had put it off when she became ill. But … it is saying yes to that, and that next chapter.”
Finding Balance in Love and Career
Despite their separate living arrangements, Roberts and Laign have found a way to make their relationship work, proving that love doesn’t always follow conventional rules. The trust and mutual understanding between them allow them to navigate their busy schedules while maintaining a strong connection.
Though they may not share a home full-time, Roberts and Laign share something even more important—a deep love and unwavering commitment to each other. Their relationship is a testament to the idea that every couple finds their own way to make things work, and for them, living apart doesn’t mean being apart.
