Rapper Busta Rhymes has been charged with three counts of assault following a violent altercation with his assistant.
The incident, which occurred on January 10, 2025, inside a luxury condominium complex in Dumbo, Brooklyn, left the 50-year-old assistant, Dashiel Gables, injured.
Law enforcement sources confirmed that Rhymes, whose real name is Trevor Tahiem Smith Jr., allegedly struck Gables multiple times in the face, causing swelling around his left eye.
According to reports, the altercation began when Rhymes reportedly became upset with Gables for using his phone during work.
The situation escalated quickly, resulting in the physical assault.
Following the incident, Rhymes turned himself in to authorities, and has since been charged with three separate assault counts.
Rhymes’ Legal History
Busta Rhymes, 52, has had several encounters with law enforcement throughout his career, often making headlines for his involvement in various legal disputes. The Grammy-nominated artist, best known for hits like “Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check” and “Break Ya Neck,” has faced a range of legal issues in the past, including charges related to weapons and assault. This most recent incident marks another brush with the law for the Brooklyn-born rapper.
In addition to the recent assault charges, Rhymes has faced legal trouble on several occasions. In 2007, he was arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI) after police observed erratic driving behavior in his GMC Denali SUV. He was pulled over in Manhattan and charged with DWI.
Previous Altercations
Rhymes’ legal history also includes other violent incidents. In 2015, he was arrested after allegedly throwing a 17-ounce protein drink at a gym employee in Chelsea. The drink struck the employee in the back of the head, leading to an assault charge.
More recently, in 2024, Rhymes was involved in a controversy when he threw a beverage in the face of a female fan. The incident occurred after the woman allegedly smacked the rapper’s rear-end. The fan later issued a public apology on social media for her actions.
Despite these previous incidents, Rhymes has maintained his prominence in the music industry, with his distinctive voice and energetic style continuing to resonate with fans. However, his ongoing legal troubles raise questions about his behavior and conduct outside of his musical career.
The Victim’s Response
Dashiel Gables, the alleged victim of the assault, has remained largely silent about the incident. When contacted by The Post, Gables explained that his lawyer had advised him not to speak to the press in order to avoid jeopardizing his case. However, he did suggest that he might provide further details in the future, possibly in exchange for a significant financial settlement. “Maybe later. Maybe in the future. I can’t mess up my case, bro. It’s just not going to be worth it. An article in the paper as opposed to a six or seven-million-dollar settlement? I’m not risking it, sorry,” Gables said.
It is unclear at this time whether Gables intends to pursue further legal action against Rhymes beyond the assault charges. As the case progresses, more information may come to light regarding the details of the altercation and the potential for a civil lawsuit.
Rhymes’ Next Court Appearance
Busta Rhymes’ legal battle is far from over. His next court appearance related to the alleged assault is scheduled for February 2, 2025. It remains to be seen how the case will unfold, and whether Rhymes will face additional consequences for his actions.
While Busta Rhymes has faced a number of legal issues over the years, this latest assault charge brings his volatile behavior back into the spotlight. Fans and critics alike will be watching closely as the rapper’s legal situation develops, with the potential for further revelations and ramifications. As he continues to navigate his legal troubles, it is clear that Rhymes’ career is now intertwined with his actions outside the music industry, adding a layer of complexity to his public persona.
Whether this incident will have lasting effects on his career remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Busta Rhymes’ run-ins with the law show no sign of slowing down anytime soon.
