Drew Barrymore is no stranger to sharing entertaining and unexpected stories, and her latest revelation about a wild night with ex-boyfriend Luke Wilson certainly fits the bill.
During a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress and talk show host opened up about an incident in the late 1990s
when she was briefly detained for public urination while attending a Beck concert.
A Not-So-Funny Memory from the Past
Barrymore, 49, candidly shared the story while chatting with Wilson, 53, on her show.
She prefaced the anecdote by admitting, “I just thought of a memory that wasn’t funny at the time.”
The Legally Blonde actor immediately picked up on what she was referring to and responded with one word: “Beck.”
The E.T. star then revealed that she had been caught urinating in public during the concert. “I got stopped for public urination!” she exclaimed, recalling how she had been hiding in the bushes when security approached. “And there I was like, peeking out of the bushes, like, ‘Hi!’”
Wilson went on to provide even more details about the incident, revealing that they were both frisked and briefly detained before being let go just in time to catch Beck’s performance.
A Close Call with Security
Fortunately for Barrymore, security didn’t take the situation too far. Instead, she and Wilson were given a warning and allowed to go about their evening. “They gave us, like, a warning, but we got let go,” she recounted. Wilson agreed, adding that the situation didn’t ruin their night. “We were like, ‘Alright, let’s go!’”
Despite the incident, Barrymore and Wilson continued to enjoy the concert and carried on with their relationship at the time. The duo dated from 1996 to 1998, during which they frequently appeared at high-profile events together.
A Lighthearted Romance
While Barrymore and Wilson were romantically involved for two years, the actress has since admitted that their relationship was not particularly serious. She described it as an “open relationship,” explaining that they were young and just having fun.
Introducing Wilson on the show, Barrymore affectionately called him “the greatest guy” and noted that they have remained close friends over the years. “We’ve known each other forever since we were such babies … we dated at one point, but the real story is we were good friends, and we’ve been good friends all this time.”
In a previous interview in 2022, Barrymore elaborated on their youthful romance, saying, “When we first met, we were young and wild. I was dating him, but I think he was also dating other people. We were just young, we were having fun, we were all playing, acting, hanging out. You’re not taking it all so seriously, and it was fun, and we had the best time.”
Life After Their Romance
Since their relationship ended in 1998, Barrymore and Wilson have both moved on to different relationships and projects. Barrymore went on to have high-profile romances with actors like Justin Long and Zach Braff before marrying Will Kopelman in 2012. The couple had two daughters, Olive, now 12, and Frankie, 10, before divorcing in 2016.
Wilson, on the other hand, has kept a lower profile when it comes to his love life. However, since 2023, he has been romantically linked to model Kendall Yates, who is in her 20s.
In addition to their personal lives, Barrymore and Wilson also worked together professionally. The pair starred alongside each other in the 1998 romantic comedy Home Fries, further cementing their connection.
Looking Back with Laughter
Despite the embarrassing nature of the incident, Barrymore and Wilson were able to laugh about it all these years later. Their ability to maintain a strong friendship and reflect on their shared history with humor speaks volumes about their bond.
Barrymore continues to embrace her past with honesty and humor, making her one of Hollywood’s most relatable and down-to-earth stars. As for Wilson, his easygoing nature and fond recollections of their time together show that some connections, no matter how wild, never truly fade.
