Ian McKellen revealed the privilege of coming out as g@y: “That’s why over 75% of young people today have come out.”

Sir Ian McKellen, one of the most revered actors in Hollywood and the theater world, has long been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.

Since publicly coming out in 1988, he has used his platform to encourage others to live openly and authentically.

Now, at 85 years old, the Lord of the Rings and X-Men star has once again shared his thoughts on the importance of being true to oneself,

urging fellow LGBTQ+ actors to embrace their identities without fear.

Encouraging Actors to Come Out

In a recent interview, McKellen expressed his belief that staying in the closet is unnecessary, especially in today’s world.

He emphasized that he has never met anyone who regretted coming out, adding that he feels sympathy for famous individuals who believe they cannot reveal their true selves.

“Being in the closet is silly – there’s no need for it,” McKellen stated. He advised those struggling with their decision to ignore publicists or advisors who may discourage them from being open. Instead, he encouraged them to “listen to your heart” and seek guidance from LGBTQ+ friends who understand the journey.

“Come out. Get into the sunshine,” he urged, reinforcing the idea that living openly brings a newfound sense of freedom and happiness.

Reflecting on Groundbreaking Work in LGBTQ+ Representation

During the conversation, McKellen looked back on one of the pivotal moments in his career—the 1970 television adaptation of Edward II. In the film, he portrayed the titular King Edward, a role that made history for featuring the first same-sex kiss on British television.

McKellen recalled how significant that moment was, noting that he still hears from men of his generation who found it deeply impactful.

“I was thrilled to play a gay man,” he admitted, explaining that his co-star at the time, James Laurenson, was straight but still delivered a convincing performance. In a lighthearted remark, McKellen joked, “You don’t have to be gay to play Edward II, but it helps.”

How Coming Out Changed His Life

McKellen has spoken openly about how coming out transformed his life, both personally and professionally. In a 2023 interview, he reflected on how the decision to embrace his identity led to positive changes in every aspect of his life.

“Almost overnight, everything in my life changed for the better,” he revealed. “My relationships with people and my whole attitude toward acting changed.”

For McKellen, being open about his identity allowed him to bring more authenticity to his work, strengthening his performances and deepening his connection to his craft.

Recovering from a Stage Accident

While McKellen continues to be an influential voice in the entertainment industry, he has also faced challenges in recent years. In June of last year, he suffered a serious fall while performing Player Kings at the Noël Coward Theatre in London. The accident resulted in a chipped vertebrae and a fractured wrist, leaving the actor in significant pain.

McKellen later opened up about his difficult recovery process, explaining that he had been experiencing ongoing discomfort, particularly in his shoulders.

“My chipped vertebrae and fractured wrist are not yet healed,” he shared two months after the incident. “I avoid going out because I’m nervous someone might bump into me, and I’ve been dealing with agonizing pain.”

However, he credited an unexpected source for minimizing his injuries—the fat suit he wore for his role as Falstaff.

“The fat suit saved my ribs and other joints, so I consider myself lucky,” he said.

A Lasting Legacy

McKellen’s impact on both the film industry and LGBTQ+ advocacy is undeniable. Through his powerful performances in films such as The Lord of the Rings, X-Men, The Da Vinci Code, and Mr. Holmes, he has solidified his place as one of the greatest actors of his generation.

Beyond his work on screen and stage, his unwavering support for LGBTQ+ rights has made a lasting impression. His latest comments serve as a reminder that living authentically can lead to greater happiness and fulfillment—both personally and professionally.

At 85, McKellen continues to inspire, proving that his voice remains as strong and influential as ever.
