Expressing those three little words—”I love you”—first in a relationship takes courage, but for some, it paves the way for something beautiful. Just ask Justin Sylvester.
While co-hosting TODAY with Jenna & Friends on February 18, the E! News personality revealed some major personal news,
all while engaging in a lighthearted conversation with Jenna Bush Hager about love and relationships.
What started as a discussion about Selena Gomez’s new single turned into an unexpected revelation that had everyone talking.
Jenna Bush Hager Recalls Saying ‘Let’s Get Married’ First
The moment unfolded as Jenna and Sylvester chatted about Selena Gomez’s latest song,
Scared of Loving You, in which the singer shares that she was the first to say “I love you” in her relationship with now-fiancé Benny Blanco.
Sylvester turned to Jenna and curiously asked, “Did you say ‘I love you’ first?” referring to her relationship with her husband, Henry Hager.
Jenna quickly set the record straight, revealing, “No, I didn’t say ‘I love you’ first, but I did propose first. And he said no.”
She went on to share the amusing backstory, explaining that when her now-husband confessed his love to her, she had a little liquid courage in her system.
“I had had a few drinks,” she admitted with a laugh. “And I said, ‘Me too! Let’s get married.’”
She added that her sister, Barbara Bush, was present during the moment but knew when to make an exit.
“She was dancing with us and then slowly danced away,” Jenna recalled. “She was like, ‘I’ll let you two do this.’”
Justin Sylvester’s Accidental ‘I Love You’ Moment
As the conversation continued, Sylvester decided to share a memorable experience of his own—one that involved an accidental love confession.
“This is why I don’t talk on the phone and text at the same time anymore,” he joked, setting the stage for his story.
According to Sylvester, he was in the early stages of a budding romance when the mix-up occurred.
“I was talking to a guy that I was kind of dating at the time. (We were) just starting out. It was fresh,” he explained.
However, while juggling a phone call with his love interest and texting a friend simultaneously, he got his words crossed in a major way.
“You know when you’re on the phone with your girlfriends, you’re like, ‘Oh, I love you. Catch you later,’” he said.
That’s when the slip happened.
“I was texting with another friend and, without thinking, I said, ‘I love you. Catch you later,’” Sylvester admitted.
He immediately realized his mistake when he heard an audible gasp on the other end of the line.
Panicked, he quickly ended the call.
“I hung up the phone,” he said, laughing.
Moments later, the man called him back, prompting Sylvester to brace himself for an awkward conversation.
“I was like, ‘I can’t do this. You cannot say anything,’” he recalled telling his date.
But in an unexpected turn of events, his love interest felt the same way.
“He was like, ‘I love you too, and I was going to tell you that I love you as well,’” Sylvester shared, calling it a major moment in their relationship.
Unfortunately, their romance didn’t last.
“But y’all aren’t together anymore,” Jenna pointed out with a knowing smile.
A Relatable and Heartwarming Exchange
The heartfelt and humorous exchange between Jenna and Justin struck a chord with many viewers, showing that love—especially when it’s new—can be messy, unpredictable, and sometimes even accidental.
Whether it’s an unplanned love confession or a bold marriage proposal, the journey of love is never a straight path. And as Sylvester and Jenna proved, sometimes those missteps turn into the best stories to tell.
