Jesse Watters from Fox News sparked controversy with his statement that men who like watching soccer are all part of the LGBT community. What is the reason behind this claim?

Fox News host Jesse Watters stirred controversy with his latest remarks,

branding male soccer fans as “phony” in what many on social media described as a bizarre and unfounded rant.

During an episode of The Five on Monday evening, Watters used a discussion about patriotism and political affiliations to launch an attack on soccer enthusiasts,

particularly those who become passionate about the sport during the World Cup.

Watters began his critique by questioning the authenticity of men who show enthusiasm for soccer, implying that their excitement is performative rather than genuine.

“You know how I know who a phony person is? When the World Cup comes around,” he declared. “All of a sudden, these so-called ‘men’ get really into sports.

You see them at the bars on a Saturday with beer, and they’re yelling all of a sudden.”

He went on to single out the fervor surrounding major international matches, such as Argentina versus France, dismissing the enthusiasm of fans as an attempt to impress others rather than a genuine appreciation for the game. “Calm down, guys. We all know what’s going on here. You’re trying to impress people that no one cares about.”

His comments did not stop at questioning the authenticity of soccer fans. Watters used the discussion as a springboard to make a broader political statement, linking his views on sports fandom to his criticisms of the Democratic Party. “That’s what’s wrong with the Democrats,” he continued. “They are always trying to be popular with the congress crowd, like foreign nations, media, college professors, or women, and they always end up sounding like these snobs that don’t like America.”

His remarks took an even more controversial turn when he attempted to suggest that certain demographic groups were rejecting the left due to their stance on such issues. “That’s why the Blacks and Hispanics and all the young men and unions are like: ‘Guys, just get away from us,’” he claimed.

Watters’ comments were met with widespread confusion and backlash on social media, with many questioning the logic behind his statements. One Twitter user reacted with disbelief, asking, “WTH (what the hell) does that even mean?” Others ridiculed the idea that soccer fans were any different from other sports enthusiasts who frequent bars to watch their favorite teams. “Unlike all the other times where men are at bars on a Saturday with beer and they are quietly talking about philosophy?” one person joked.

Another social media user took issue with Watters’ apparent lack of knowledge about sports culture, writing, “Jesse has never been in a bar watching sports in his life.” Others pointed out the global appeal of soccer and how the World Cup brings together millions of fans across different cultures, making it one of the most widely celebrated sporting events worldwide.

While Watters is no stranger to making provocative statements, his latest comments struck many as particularly puzzling. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, and its fan base includes people from all walks of life, including many in the United States. The claim that men who get excited about the sport during the World Cup are somehow inauthentic or trying to impress others seems to overlook the natural enthusiasm that surrounds major sporting events.

Furthermore, his attempt to link soccer fandom to political identity drew criticism for being a baseless and divisive argument. Many pointed out that sports and politics do not always intersect in the ways that Watters suggested and that millions of American men, regardless of their political views, enjoy watching the World Cup and other major soccer tournaments.

As the backlash continues, it remains to be seen whether Watters will address the criticism or clarify his statements. For now, his comments have sparked widespread debate, with many questioning the reasoning behind his critique of soccer fans and his broader political implications. Whether intentional or not, his remarks have once again placed him at the center of controversy, drawing attention to the sometimes unpredictable nature of his on-air rhetoric.
