Michael Strahan may be known for his charisma on Good Morning America
and his illustrious football career, but at his core, he’s a devoted father.
The television personality recently appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show,
which was guest-hosted by comedian Roy Wood Jr. on March 6. During the candid conversation, Strahan reflected on his experiences as a father, a new grandfather,
and a protective parent—especially when it comes to his twin daughters, Isabella and Sophia.
Embracing Grandfatherhood: “Big Papa” Over Grandpa
Strahan, 52, couldn’t help but gush over his new role as a grandfather to baby Onyx, his oldest daughter Tanita’s son. While discussing his grandson, he revealed his preference for a more unique grandparent nickname.
“I want to be called ‘Big Papa,’” he shared, explaining that it had a better ring to it than the traditional “grandpa.” The audience and host laughed along with him, clearly entertained by his enthusiasm for his growing family.
Celebrating Isabella’s Strength After Cancer Battle
During the interview, the conversation turned to his 20-year-old daughter Isabella, who faced a life-changing health battle in 2023. She was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, the most common type of brain cancer in children. After undergoing intensive treatment, she was declared cancer-free in July 2024.
Strahan was visibly proud as he provided an update on Isabella’s recovery. “An absolutely amazing young woman,” he said, beaming. “She’s doing great and back in school.”
After taking a semester off for her treatments, Isabella returned to the University of Southern California. In addition to resuming her studies, she has also been raising awareness about childhood cancer. She launched a YouTube channel documenting her treatment journey and pledged all earnings from her videos to Duke Children’s Hospital, where she received her care.
Navigating the Challenges of Fatherhood
As a father of four—Tanita, Michael Jr., and twins Isabella and Sophia—Strahan is no stranger to balancing parenthood with his career. However, being a girl dad has brought a unique set of challenges, especially now that his daughters are young adults.
When Roy Wood Jr. asked about Isabella and Sophia, Strahan admitted he’s still getting used to seeing them grow up. His protective instincts, however, remain intact—particularly when it comes to their dating lives.
Sizing Up the Boyfriends
Strahan revealed that Isabella is now in a relationship, which prompted a knowing reaction from the studio audience. Roy jokingly asked if he was the kind of father who would intimidate his daughters’ boyfriends, referencing the famous Bad Boys scene featuring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.
“I’ve done that before,” Strahan confessed, recalling a past experience with his oldest daughter Tanita. “But I’ve got to tone it down.”
Despite his initial protective nature, Strahan emphasized that he wants to be the kind of father his daughters feel comfortable bringing their boyfriends home to meet. That said, he still makes a point to “size them up” whenever they come around.
The former NFL star shared a humorous observation about both Isabella and Sophia’s partners—coincidentally, both are college baseball players. “I don’t know where the baseball players came from!” he joked.
Keeping Up with the Competition
Strahan admitted that the size of his daughters’ boyfriends has given him something new to think about. “These are some big kids!” he said with a laugh. He even joked that if Isabella’s boyfriend ever “acts up,” he might need to call the young man’s father or friends for backup because “these are pretty big kids.”
Roy was quick to call him out on his nervousness, teasing, “That’s not Big Papa behavior! That’s young granddaddy behavior.”
Sophia’s Journey and Their Strong Sister Bond
While Isabella attends the University of Southern California, her twin sister Sophia is studying at Duke University. Sophia was by Isabella’s side throughout her cancer treatment, providing unwavering support. Their bond remains strong despite being in different states for school.
Isabella’s health battle gave Strahan an even greater appreciation for fatherhood, and he continues to cherish every moment with his daughters.
Balancing Career, Family, and Fatherhood
Between co-hosting Good Morning America, covering sports for FOX, and hosting The $100,000 Pyramid, Strahan has a full plate. However, he never lets his busy schedule interfere with his role as a father.
His love for his children is evident in the way he speaks about them, whether it’s celebrating their milestones, supporting them through hardships, or jokingly keeping an eye on their boyfriends.
A Proud Father, Ready for Every Chapter
Strahan’s recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show provided a heartfelt glimpse into his life as a dad and grandfather. From embracing the joys of being “Big Papa” to navigating the challenges of raising strong, independent daughters, he remains dedicated to his family.
Through humor, wisdom, and unwavering support, Michael Strahan continues to show that while he may be a TV icon and former football star, his greatest role is being a loving father.
