Sheinelle Jones caused a stir by announcing she’s about to RETURN TO TODAY, but in a completely different role: “This time, even the daughter of former President Bush will have to call me boss.”

Sheinelle Jones, a beloved anchor and co-host on *Today*, shared with her fans on January 15

that she is taking an extended break from the show to address a family health matter.

While Jones has not revealed the exact details of the situation, a source close to the *Today* host disclosed to *PEOPLE* that the matter is “serious.”

This announcement comes after the 46-year-old’s absence from the show since December 18, leaving many viewers wondering about the cause of her sudden departure.

The source confirmed that the health matter does not involve Jones herself or any of her three children—14-year-old Kayin and 12-year-old twins Clara and Uche

whom she shares with her husband, Uche Ojeh.

Despite the lack of specific details, the family is known to be facing a challenging time, and Jones has expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support she has received from both her *Today* colleagues and fans during this period.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Sheinelle thanked her followers for their concern and explained her absence. “I sincerely appreciate all of you who have reached out while I’ve been absent from the show,” she wrote. “I want to share with you that I’m taking time to deal with a family health matter.” She also expressed her deep appreciation for her *Today* family and the fans who have shown so much love. “It’s not lost on me how lucky I am to have not only the support of my *Today* show family but to also have all of you,” Jones added. “Your kindness means so much to me. I’ll see you soon.” The post was signed, “Love, Sheinelle.”

Jones has been a familiar face on *Today* since joining the program in 2014. Throughout her tenure, she has been a consistent presence, co-hosting *3rd Hour of Today* alongside Al Roker, Craig Melvin, and Dylan Dreyer. Additionally, she frequently fills in as co-anchor on the main *Today* show and guest co-hosts *Today with Hoda & Jenna*, now known as *Today with Jenna & Friends*. Her versatility and warmth have made her a favorite among viewers, who are no doubt missing her presence on the show.

In addition to her broadcasting work, Jones is also a mother and author. This spring, she will release her debut book, *Through Mom’s Eyes*, which draws inspiration from her recurring *Today* segment where she interviews the mothers of successful celebrities. The book, slated for release on April 15, explores modern parenting and the wisdom gained from raising successful children. In her book, Jones reflects on the lessons she has learned from the mothers of prominent figures such as Lady Gaga, Kevin Durant, Matthew McConaughey, and many more.

Jones has spoken about the personal impact the process of writing the book had on her. In an interview with *PEOPLE* in August, she revealed that writing the book allowed her to reflect on her own experiences as a mother, as well as her relationship with her mother. “Even while I was writing this, there were times that were really tough and I would be writing a chapter with Lucille O’Neal, Shaq’s mom, and she talked about alcoholism, and I’m going through my own thing and I’m like, ‘You know what? She was able to push through that and motherhood didn’t stop,’” Jones shared.

The book is not just a collection of stories but an inspiring tribute to mothers everywhere. Jones hopes readers will find inspiration in the tales shared by these extraordinary women, including those who raised stars like Shaquille O’Neal, Venus and Serena Williams, Tyra Banks, Jessica Simpson, and many more. Through the pages, Jones hopes to connect with readers on a personal level, evoking emotions and offering encouragement as they navigate their own parenting journeys.

As Sheinelle takes the time she needs to focus on her family, fans are showing their unwavering support for her. Her absence from the *Today* show may have raised questions, but it’s clear that she is surrounded by a loving and supportive community.

Fans are looking forward to her return, eagerly awaiting updates on both her personal situation and her upcoming book. For now, Jones remains deeply appreciative of the kindness shown to her during this sensitive time and promises to return to the *Today* show as soon as possible.
